Forth 0 Cambuslang 3

The Wanderers lost 3-0 to Cambuslang in their final home game of the season, Steven McLung netting a hat-trick to take the Central 2nd Division title to Somervell Park.

Forth were without David Grant,Barry Canning,Tony Traynor and Stephen McQuade for this match. Their places were taken by the returning Jamie McKenzie,Chris McGroarty,Kenny Wright and Craig Crawford.

IMG_3251The game itself was symptomatic of Forth’s season in that although the scoreline suggests a one-sided romp for the visitors, for most of the match it was anything but.

Things looked bleak when Steven McLung put the visitors ahead after two minutes with their first attack, scoring with a neat finish. However, the Wanderers played their way back into the game and again displayed some fine passing football, only lacking that incisive final ball. Yami Misanjo and Kenny Wright both had some joy down the ‘Lang right hand flank and visiting keeper Christopher Treacey did well to turn a Chris McGroarty shot away for a corner after a Misanjo cutback, before gathering a deflected Gordon shot from a Wright cross. Forth also had a penalty claim turned down when a clear handball in the ‘Lang box was deemed to have been caused by a Misanjo foul.

Craig Crawford then fired over as Forth continued to press but on 36 minutes the ‘Lang delivered a sucker punch when a quick break found McLung and once again he finished with aplomb under Hutchison. Worse was to follow on 40 minutes when that man McLung had time and space to dispatch a cross from the right into the net for his hat-trick. The interval arrived with Forth 3-0 down, having been given a lesson in clinical finishing.

To their credit, Forth began the second period brightly and a Wright shot was blocked for a corner from which Treacy   held the subsequent Martin Harty shot. Kenny Wright then had a great chance to reduce the arrears on 54 minutes when sent through by Misanjo but although his shot evaded Treacey, it hit the inside of the post before being cleared.

Cambuslang then enjoyed a sustained period of attacking and only some profligate finishing, Thomas Hoey being one of the culprits, and some inspired goalkeeping by Hutchison in the Forth goal kept the score at 3-0. Forth created  one final chance on 78 minutes when Misanjo broke through on goal but Treacey stood tall and made the save.

All that remained was the final whistle and the Cambuslang celebrations.

Congratulations to both Cambuslang on winning the title and Maryhill on being promoted.

The Wanderers have one final league match to play, away at Johnstone Burgh on Saturday 11th May.
